|Homework: expectations at Cooper School
All students are expected to write any homework they receive from their teachers in their Cooper School planner. This will enable you to see both how much homework they have and when they are due to hand it in. All students must hand their homework in on time to avoid penalties. Any reason for late homework must be accompanied by a note from a parent in the student’s planner. Students should ask parents to sign their planner once a week.
At Key Stage Three (Years 7-9), all subjects can set homework where appropriate once a week, although this is unlikely in very practical subjects like P.E. Homework might take the form of finishing off relevant class work, research, note taking, relevant work sheets and topic-related tasks. Approximately thirty minutes worth of work may be given per subject, although older students may have on-going projects in some subjects which may occasionally take longer. Students will be given at least forty-eight hours to complete tasks. Students need to manage their homework effectively so that it can all be handed in on appropriate deadlines. Students can make use of the Study Centre at lunchtimes (except Wednesday) to receive help with completing homework from staff.
At Key Stage Four (Years 10-11), all subjects taken by students will set appropriate homework on a weekly basis, which may take the form of coursework, finishing off class tasks, topic-related work sheets etc. However, due to the nature of GCSE coursework, some tasks or projects may be on-going and it is therefore difficult to quantify how long each student should be expected to spend on tasks on a weekly basis. It is essential that all students meet set deadlines for coursework in order to achieve the maximum marks that they can towards their final examination grades. Parents should still monitor homework through signing their child’s planner on a weekly basis. Students are invited to the Study Centre at lunchtimes for support with homework (except Wednesday). Maths only – 45 mins h/wk for KS3 Maths and 1 hour+ for KS4 Maths.
Any parent with concerns in relation to their child’s homework should contact their child’s Learning Co-ordinator (Head of Year) or the Student Support Manager for their house.
